SNEB Annual Conference - Sustainability
Commitment to Sustainability
The Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior (SNEB) is committed to sustainability as a core value and goal. This year we hope you will take note of actions we’ll take at the annual conference to reduce waste, such as promote the use of reusable coffee mugs and reusable eating utensils (see options here and here). We encourage you to bring your own mug and/or water bottle as a personal action to reduce waste.
What SNEB is Doing
Healthy Meeting Guidelines
The following Healthy Meeting Guidelines were adopted via resolution by the SNEB membership in September 2014 and by the Board of Directors in October 2015. To the extent that funding and staff resources are available and the item is logistically feasible, SNEB will incorporate these guidelines into its meetings. SNEB’s goal is to fulfill at least 80% of the guidelines for each meeting.
What the Hotel is Doing
The Greening of Grand Cypress
The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress has adopted a comprehensive Green Meeting plan to guide its activities towards more sustainable practices. Read more about the hotel's sustainability efforts here.
Three Palm Designation
The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress has been recognized with a Three Palm designation from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Green Lodging Program. The program designates and recognizes lodging facilities that make a voluntary commitment to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources. Learn more about the designation here and view the Hyatt's certificate here.
What You Can Do
Reduce your carbon footprint. SNEB recognizes that personal travel to our annual conference is likely accounts for a large fraction of your own yearly carbon footprint. An average round-trip commercial flight to the SNEB meeting of about 2000 miles produces roughly 1700 lbs of CO2 per passenger. In an effort to reduce emissions, we encourage you to consider purchasing carbon offsets.
What are carbon offsets?
A carbon offset is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. Carbon offsets are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2). One tonne of carbon offset represents the reduction of one tonne of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases (source). Purchasing carbon offsets supports environmental projects around the globe that aim to reduce future emissions.
How can I purchase carbon offsets?
Below is a list of organizations you may purchase carbon offsets from to balance your carbon footprint:
Keep in mind there may be more locally-based carbon offset programs in your area. For example, in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, travelers can purchase carbon offsets from the Finger Lakes Climate Fund.
Ride sharing can help reduce the environmental impact of travel-related emissions compared to driving individually. All Lyft rides are now carbon neutral. As Lyft becomes one of the world’s largest voluntary purchasers of carbon offsets, every ride will now contribute to fighting climate change. Read More Here.
