The Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior (SNEB) is seeking applicants for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (JNEB), which is published 12 times per year online (www.jneb.org).

The Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (JNEB), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, since 1969, serves as a global resource to advance nutrition education and behavior related research, practice, and policy. JNEB publishes original research, as well as papers focused on emerging issues, policies and practices broadly related to nutrition education and behavior. These topics include, but are not limited to, nutrition education interventions; theoretical interpretation of behavior; epidemiology of nutrition and health; food systems; food assistance programs; nutrition and behavior assessment; and public health nutrition. Strategies to implement nutrition education, such as policy, systems, and environmental approaches or technological advances are also considered. Skill development within interventions, such as food procurement and culinary expertise; physical activity partnered with nutrition education; and strategies to reduce food insecurity are valued.

The EiC is responsible for the overall management, content and production of JNEB, aligning with the Council of Publishing Ethics guidelines.  Most work is accomplished through the publisher’s platform, Editorial Manager (EM). The EiC provides training and supervision to the Senior Associate Editor (SrAE), Associate Editors (AE), and an Editorial Assistant, which includes annual performance evaluations. The Associate Editors are responsible for inviting reviewers and making editorial decisions on most types of articles with support from the Senior Associate Editor and EiC. The Editorial Assistant manages the reviews of New Resources and developing themed collections.

The EiC works closely with the Managing Editor for day-to-day functions; and with the Journal Committee (JC), SNEB Board of Directors, Publisher (Elsevier), and SNEB Executive Director for strategic planning and policy updates. The EiC works with the JC when selecting Board of Editor members and journal award recipients.

This position is a renewable contract, with compensation commensurate with experience and to be negotiated with the SNEB Executive Director with BOD approval.

Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior

The Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (JNEB), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, since 1969, serves as a global resource to advance nutrition education and behavior-related research, practice, and policy. JNEB supports the continued development of diversity, equity, and inclusivity as well as transparency in publishing.

JNEB publishes original research, as well as papers focused on emerging issues, policies, and practices broadly related to nutrition education and behavior. These topics include, but are not limited to, nutrition education interventions, theoretical interpretation of behavior, epidemiology of nutrition and health, food systems, food assistance programs, nutrition and behavior assessment, and public health nutrition. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the overall management and production of the content of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (JNEB), published online 12 times a year by Elsevier.  The Editor-in-Chief provides all services necessary to manage the affairs of the JNEB in a businesslike fashion. The Editor-in-Chief supervises support staff, which currently includes managing editor services, the Senior Associate Editor, Associate Editors, and an Editor Assistant focused on reviews of new resources. The Editor-in-Chief works with Elsevier and its delegates, such as the publisher, journal manager, etc. Finally, the Editor-in-Chief works in collaboration with the Journal Committee (JC) and its subcommittees to review policies and practices related to JNEB.

The Editor-in-Chief also facilitates the growth of JNEB, including but not limited to the following editorial and management services that may, at the Editor-in-Chief’s discretion, be delegated to Associate Editors or other staff:

  • Provides strategies, insight, leadership into the continued growth of JNEB authors, readers, and reviewers reflecting the overall goals of SNEB
  • Is responsible for the content and sequence for each issue, including providing editorials “From JNEB” and oversight/corrections/approval for the “From SNEB” editorial from submission to final publication
  • Manages JNEB administrative affairs, including hiring and supervision of staff
  • Maintains the Board of Editors in conjunction with the Journal Committee
  • Maintains timely communication with the Board of Editors, authors, reviewers, SNEB staff, Journal Committee and the SNEB Board of Directors (BOD) for all accomplishments, trends, and emerging issues; and
  • Maintains JNEB policies reflecting both the Committee on Publication Ethics guidelines, standards of the publisher, and mission of SNEB.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Doctorate in nutrition or related field
  • Strong publication history in nutrition education and behavior change or related field
  • Letter of support from Supervisor (e.g., Department Head), or, if acting as an independent contractor, a statement about work plan/arrangement

Preferred 

  • Demonstrated experience in journal publishing and editing
  • SNEB Membership
  • Prior experience as Board of Editor or Associate Editor level position for JNEB or other journal(s) in a related field

  • Highly efficient self-starter with excellent organizational skills, problem-solving skills, analytical skills, and an eye for detail
  • Excellent communication, feedback, and presentation skills, both written and oral
  • Comfortable working with a remote team
