Description:Eat Well for Less is a series of self-paced, web-based learning modules offering ideas about how to meet some of the challenges of running a household.

The programís goal is to share useful information about how to plan healthful meals, prepare tasty, low-cost foods that are quick and easy, and make food dollars last through the month.

Comments:Learning modules include an on-line quiz in both English and Spanish.

Ideal for Food Stamp/workforce preparation offices, Family Resource Centers, and substitute teachers.


A. Use of MyPlate/MyPlate or the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Material based substantially on MyPlate or 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Module 1 introduces MyPyramid and links the user to MyPyramid.gov website. Authors should check the links, many links are not working. The website does not address the personalization aspects of MyPyramid, instead a general guideline is provided for amounts needed for adults. The link to the kids page does not address the amounts needed question.
B. Scope
Scope of information appropriate for target audience and essential topics discussed in appropriate detail.
C. Purpose
Purpose of material clearly stated in title or introduction.
D. Organization
Material well-organized and major points presented clearly.
E. Accuracy
Information contains minor inaccuracies.

Authors use a definition of discretionary calories which is different from the one used in MyPyramid.gov

Material does not assume that reader has background information.

Learning objectives identifiable and met.

Material includes a variety of stimulating and interesting learning experiences, questions, projects, or suggestions for further action that will involve the reader.

It would be more engaging to include some activities that the user could do. For example, in Module 3, the user could work with real numbers to work out a budget.

Also, it might be more interesting to have a quiz interwoven into the lesson or at the end of the lesson getting a prompt to take the quiz.

Material reflects, but does not emphasize, a variety of values, practices, and/or food patterns representative of different lifestyles, cultures, and socioeconomic levels.

Print Materials
A. Writing Style
Main ideas are clear and flow smoothly.
B. Writing Approach
Writing approach is positive and personal. Active voice is used most of the time.
C. Vocabulary
Vocabulary used is appropriate for intended audience. Minimizes use of technical terms and if used, are defined.
D. Supportive Illustrations
Illustrations are related to the material in some way. Most tables and graphs are as simple and easy to read as possible. In most tables and graphs, information is provided in a form requiring no further explanation.

Some illustrations such as the ones of Food Contamination and the lactose intolerance pages should have captions to explain.

Also, the linkage for How Much do you need? for the food groups links to a very difficult to read table. Instead it should link to MyPyramid.gov, Inside the Pyramid, How many cups/ounces do you need section for each food group.

E. Layout and Design
Color, design, and layout of material are attractive, and stimulate interest, without being too busy. There is good balance between print and blank space.

G. Headings/Cueing Devices
Clear headings are provided for each topic area. Cueing devices (shading, boxes, arrows, etc.) are used to direct attention to key points.
H. Approximate Reading Level
Reading level is at 6th, 7th or 8th grade level.

Web Sites
A. Currentness of Information
Web site information is current; contains some broken hyperlinks.
B. Readability
Text size is adequate for viewing. Good contrast between text and background.
C. Navigation
Information is somewhat difficult to find due to limited navigation tools.

Navigation from one module to other is not direct - one has to go through the home page.

The link to kids page on MyPyramid.gov does not refer to how much do kids need of a certain food group. The link should be to Inside the pyramid for each food group.

Overall Comments on Resource Reviewed

A. Positive Points of the Reviewed Resource:
Available in Spanish and English. Easy to read, navigate, and provides a simple summary.
B. Points that Could Be Improved:
Make sure all the links are working. For the MyPyramid Module, in each food group section, instead of linking to the MyPyramid plan for all food groups (a dense table to read), consider linking to the page for Inside MyPyramid. For example, for grains link to http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/grains_amount.aspx#

Also, it is not clear as to why the authors link to the kids MyPyramid web page to find out how much children need of a particular food group.

Could be more interactive.

C. General Comments
This can be a useful web based tool if the following points are considered:
1. more interactive
2. consistent with MyPyramid (Personalization, discretionary calories)
3. relevant links are provided (amounts need for a specific age and gender)
4. All links are working
D. Overall Summary
A potentially useful website that covers three major areas of interest for limited resource audience. In a short time, the user can learn basic concepts about MyPyramid, Food Safety, and Meal Planning. Recommend that the authors make the suggested changed to improve the website.
